Every year since 2022, the Planning for Real Unit has delivered two half day sessions on the Planning for Real methodology for students on the Planning Masters Course at Sheffield University.

Margaret Wilkinson, Head of the Unit, works closely with Andy Inch and Lee Crookes of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University, in the design and delivery of these half day workshops.   These sessions are run in order to enable the Planning Masters students to deliver projects which see pupils in both Primary and Secondary Schools engage around participatory planning.

The programme for the half day sessions covers: understanding barriers to participation and what helps people of all ages to participate; an introduction and explanation of the Planning for Real methodology and process; hands-on activities to aid understanding of using the 3D model to put suggestions and concerns forward, prioritisation, and action planning.

The sessions have enabled each year’s Masters students to deliver successful participatory planning projects in a number of different schools not only in Sheffield but in the wider area.

It is anticipated that the PFR Unit will be asked back next year to deliver further half day sessions to students at this University.
